{"id":1526,"date":"2017-05-01T14:15:33","date_gmt":"2017-05-01T14:15:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=1526"},"modified":"2017-05-01T14:15:33","modified_gmt":"2017-05-01T14:15:33","slug":"tstc-gives-grad-a-second-chance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=1526","title":{"rendered":"TSTC Gives Grad a Second Chance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(HARLINGEN) &#8211; For Texas State Technical College graduate Joaquin Villarreal, TSTC was his second chance at a career.<\/p>\n<p>The 37-year-old walked in his cap and gown across the stage Friday night at Marine Military Academy\u2019s Yeckel Memorial Auditorium and received his associate degree in Architectural Design and Engineering Graphics Technology.<\/p>\n<p>The Harlingen native was also one of 14 students who received the distinction of being named a Board of Regents Honor Roll member for his perfect 4.0 grade-point average.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all so bittersweet,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m excited to move on to bigger and better things, but I\u2019m going to miss all of the wonderful people I\u2019ve met here. I\u2019ve made some really good friends. We\u2019re like a family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Villarreal came to TSTC with a bachelor\u2019s degree in history from the University of Texas at San Antonio, but he said finding a teaching job was near impossible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started looking for teaching positions even before moving, and I couldn\u2019t seem to find anything,\u201d Villarreal said.<\/p>\n<p>It was his younger brother, who worked in drafting, who encouraged Villarreal\u2019s career change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything about his career appealed to me,\u201d Villarreal said. \u201cAfter some research, I found TSTC and was hooked. I knew this <a href=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/TSTCBORGradJoaquinVillarreal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1527 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/TSTCBORGradJoaquinVillarreal-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"Joaquin Villarreal\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/TSTCBORGradJoaquinVillarreal-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/TSTCBORGradJoaquinVillarreal-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/TSTCBORGradJoaquinVillarreal-1024x731.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/TSTCBORGradJoaquinVillarreal-624x446.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>was what I needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Villarreal was one of the oldest in his class, making him nervous and a bit apprehensive about continuing, but he found that this same fear motivated him to keep going.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had to start all over again, and at my age that feels like an accomplishment,\u201d he said. \u201cI have a great support system in my family and friends, and because of that I have achieved more than I could have imagined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to maintaining all As, Villarreal also worked as a history tutor for TSTC\u2019s College Success and served as vice president and president for the Architectural Design and Engineering Graphics Technology club.<\/p>\n<p>During his time in the club, Villarreal oversaw fundraisers and community service projects and helped local businesses, such as the Harlingen Public Library, by creating drafts and blueprints for building renovations, and surveying land with the program\u2019s earth rover to help a local community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoaquin was one of our hardest-working students,\u201d said Architectural Design and Engineering Graphics Technology Lead Instructor Samuel Pizano. \u201cHe was always the first one in and the last one out. He exemplifies the traits of a leader, and our students benefited from his leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After having watched him master his field for the past two years, Pizano knows Villarreal will be successful and an asset wherever he goes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has what it takes to be successful,\u201d Pizano said. \u201cHe embodies the character that employers look for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for his success, Villarreal credits TSTC, his instructors and the training he received.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTSTC has by far been my best college experience,\u201d he said. \u201cFrom the hands-on training to the experienced instructors, I have enjoyed it all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Villarreal is in the process of completing job applications and said he knows he will find a job soon with the help of his instructors and TSTC\u2019s Career Services office.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, Villarreal hopes to gain the experience he needs to grow into a management or trainer position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have the foundation I need to begin my career, and TSTC gave me that,\u201d he said. \u201cThis college must continue to grow in our area, because it gave me a second chance and for that I am grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Drafting and Design is also offered at TSTC\u2019s Abilene, Brownwood, Marshall, North Texas, Sweetwater and Waco campuses.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on Architectural Design and Engineering Graphics Technology, call 956-364-4694 or visit tstc.edu.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(HARLINGEN) &#8211; For Texas State Technical College graduate Joaquin Villarreal, TSTC was his second chance at a career.
