{"id":1746,"date":"2017-06-26T15:15:20","date_gmt":"2017-06-26T15:15:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=1746"},"modified":"2017-06-26T15:15:20","modified_gmt":"2017-06-26T15:15:20","slug":"tstc-auto-collision-student-receives-industry-scholarship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=1746","title":{"rendered":"TSTC Auto Collision Student Receives Industry Scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">(HARLINGEN) &#8211; With only one income and a two-year-old son, money is tight for Texas State Technical College Auto Collision Technology student Justin Maldonado.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">However, the Harlingen native turned his luck around when he applied for and received a $1,000 Service King scholarship which can be used for tuition, room and board, books and tools.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">Service King is one of the largest collision repair centers in the county with 178 locations in 20 states and works closely with the Collision Repair Education Foundation to provide scholarships like the one Maldonado received.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">\u201cI was so excited when I found out I had been chosen for this,\u201d he said. \u201cI never win anything. I\u2019m so eager to get the tools that I need.\u201d<a href=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TSTC-JustinMaldonado-SrvcKing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1747 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TSTC-JustinMaldonado-SrvcKing-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"Justin Maldonado\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TSTC-JustinMaldonado-SrvcKing-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TSTC-JustinMaldonado-SrvcKing-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TSTC-JustinMaldonado-SrvcKing-1024x731.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TSTC-JustinMaldonado-SrvcKing-624x446.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">The 24-year-old said he is so thankful for the opportunity that Service King has provided for him and his family.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">\u201cMy wife is the only one working right now, so with this money I can buy tools and get small jobs to help her out,\u201d said Maldonado. \u201cAnd once I graduate I\u2019ll be ready to work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">TSTC Auto Collision Technology Instructor Jose Vasquez said that he knows this award has already had a huge impact on Maldonado\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">\u201cI\u2019m very proud that he has won this award,\u201d said Vasquez. \u201cAs an instructor you want the best for your students and in Justin\u2019s case this money allows him to fulfill goals toward his success and future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">Vasquez added that Maldonado is an all-around, exceptional student who is always willing to lend a helping hand.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">\u201cHis willingness to help others in class shows the kind of responsible and compassionate person he is,\u201d said Vasquez. \u201cHe not only thinks about his success, but also about the success of others. He\u2019s a true leader.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">As for Maldonado\u2019s future, he said he will hopefully find a good-paying job that will support his family and will allow him to save money to start his own business.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">\u201cI have always loved repairing and painting cars so I know this is what I\u2019m supposed to be doing,\u201d he said. \u201cI have so many ideas and this program and scholarship have given me a foot in the door to a career I love.
