{"id":1782,"date":"2017-07-03T08:00:53","date_gmt":"2017-07-03T08:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=1782"},"modified":"2017-06-29T22:03:50","modified_gmt":"2017-06-29T22:03:50","slug":"tstc-hosts-summer-college-and-career-institute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=1782","title":{"rendered":"TSTC Hosts Summer College and Career Institute"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(FORT BEND) &#8211; Sparks were flying at Texas State Technical College as the 11 high school students enrolled in a nine-day College and Career Institute got some hands-on experience welding.<\/p>\n<p>The institute is the first of its kind for TSTC and is a partnership between the college, Project Grad Houston, Caf\u00e9 College Houston and the Texas Workforce Solution (TWC).<a href=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TSTC-CCI-Student-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1783 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TSTC-CCI-Student-1-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"TSTC CCI Student 1\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TSTC-CCI-Student-1-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TSTC-CCI-Student-1-768x1186.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TSTC-CCI-Student-1-663x1024.jpg 663w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TSTC-CCI-Student-1-624x963.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been a pleasure hosting these students on campus,\u201d said TSTC Recruitment Coordinator Marigold Sagrado. \u201cThey are attentive, well-mannered and I know they will be successful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The students participating in this institute were from Houston-based Southwest Charter School, Sharpstown High School and the Partnership for the Advancement and Immersion of Refugees and have shown an interest in pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematic (STEM) fields.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always great when we can bring quality program options and a college experience opportunity to high school students who may not get this chance anywhere else,\u201d said Anne Sung, Project Grad Houston vice president and chief strategy officer.<\/p>\n<p>The institute focused on five career areas offered by TSTC: Cyber Security Technology, Welding Technology, Precision Machining Technology, HVAC Technology and Diesel Equipment Technology.<\/p>\n<p>Instructors from each program engaged the students with hands-on career exploration activities and spoke with them regarding education pathways, the college application and financial aid process and careers they can pursue if they obtain a certificate or associate degree from TSTC.<\/p>\n<p>During the institute students also received lessons on job interviewing and resume writing. Students learned how to represent themselves professionally by practicing greetings, handshakes, eye contact and self-introductions. \u00a0A portion of their time was also dedicated to interviews skills and resume development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want these students to leave this institute open to the idea that college is a possibility and that they can be successful,\u201d said Adriana Estrada, College Institute coordinator. \u201cIt\u2019s about college and career readiness.\u201d<a href=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TSTC-CCI-Students-2-5x7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1784 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TSTC-CCI-Students-2-5x7-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"TSTC CCI Students 2 5x7\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TSTC-CCI-Students-2-5x7-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TSTC-CCI-Students-2-5x7-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TSTC-CCI-Students-2-5x7-1024x731.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TSTC-CCI-Students-2-5x7-624x446.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To experience a real-work environment, the students also visited TSTC Board of Regent Joe Gurecky at his local business Gurecky Manufacturing, Inc. They had the opportunity to tour the facility and speak to professionals in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of the students have expressed interest in pursuing TSTC after high school,\u201d said Sagrado. \u201cI consider this 100 percent success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sung said their data shows that students who attend at least two institutes are more likely to enroll in college after high school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe impact of these institutes helping students get inspired to go to college is very powerful,\u201d said Sung. \u201cAnd we\u2019re very grateful to our partners at the TWC and TSTC for making this program possible for our students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the programs mentioned or to register for Fall 2017, visit tstc.edu.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(FORT BEND) &#8211; Sparks were flying at Texas State Technical College as the 11 high school students enrolled in a nine-day College and Career Institute got some hands-on experience welding.
