{"id":2033,"date":"2017-09-08T11:15:46","date_gmt":"2017-09-08T11:15:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=2033"},"modified":"2017-09-08T15:48:06","modified_gmt":"2017-09-08T15:48:06","slug":"tstc-aviation-programs-receive-jet-engine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=2033","title":{"rendered":"TSTC Aviation Programs Receive Jet Engine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(WACO) \u2013 Rick Fazollo of Waco is 5 feet 8 inches in height but is looking forward to the tall challenges looming over him in the aviation maintenance hangar at Texas State Technical College.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fazollo, 28, an Aircraft Airframe Technology and Aircraft Powerplant Technology major, said he is eager to start troubleshooting and repairing a recently gifted multimillion dollar CFM56 high-bypass turbofan jet engine used in Southwest Airlines\u2019 Boeing 737 fleet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I was in the Marines, I worked with turbine engines,\u201d said Fazollo, a native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. \u201cSeeing it being brought here was breathtaking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 5,500 lb. and at least 6-foot-tall engine will be used by students in TSTC\u2019s Aircraft Airframe Technology and Aircraft Powerplant Technology programs. Southwest Airlines will give the aviation maintenance programs the engine\u2019s instruction manuals later this fall so it can be incorporated into classes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s going to give our aviation mechanics a boost in their learning,\u201d said Carson Pearce, TSTC\u2019s statewide transportation division director in Waco.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pearce and Kelly Filgo, lead instructor for the airframe and powerplant technology programs at TSTC, both said it would be impossible to purchase an engine like this for class usage. They said in the past students have only been able to see photographs of this kind of engine in theory classes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are getting students in front of it with their eyes,\u201d Filgo said. \u201cThe students are very aware of what a great gift this is.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christopher Scheel, 26, of Houston is majoring in the airframe and powerplant technology programs and said he has been impressed so far with the engine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve been trying to figure out how the cooling systems work,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a really good opportunity to get your hands on something like this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pearce said TSTC has worked to build relationships with Southwest Airlines and American Airlines, which are both based in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
