{"id":2162,"date":"2017-10-24T18:18:56","date_gmt":"2017-10-24T18:18:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=2162"},"modified":"2017-10-24T18:18:56","modified_gmt":"2017-10-24T18:18:56","slug":"tstc-culinary-arts-student-awarded-2500-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=2162","title":{"rendered":"TSTC Culinary Arts Student Awarded $2,500 Grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Gissell-Lomas-Tavarezsm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2163\" src=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Gissell-Lomas-Tavarezsm-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Gissell-Lomas-Tavarezsm-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Gissell-Lomas-Tavarezsm-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Gissell-Lomas-Tavarezsm-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Gissell-Lomas-Tavarezsm-624x416.jpg 624w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Gissell-Lomas-Tavarezsm.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>(ABILENE) &#8211; Gissell Lomas Tavarez, a Texas State Technical College Culinary Arts student, recently was awarded a $2,500 grant from the National Restaurant Association.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tavarez said the application process involved completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), writing an essay and getting three letters of recommendation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt does take a lot of work, but I finished it, and the association was really nice,\u201d Tavarez said. \u201cThe essay, if you like doing what you do, you\u2019ll write brilliantly about it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chef Kayleen Moon, a TSTC Culinary Arts instructor, said that Tavarez absolutely deserved the grant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe\u2019s very diligent. She had to go through a few more hoops to get here than most,\u201d Moon said. \u201cShe\u2019s very independent and still manages to do well in school. I\u2019m very impressed with her. She worked really hard to get this scholarship.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tavarez said the money helped her take a break from work and focus on her studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was so excited,\u201d Tavarez said. \u201cI knew I wasn\u2019t going to struggle as much. It\u2019s so hard because after a while you\u2019re like, \u2018How am I going to do it? I\u2019ll have to work more.\u2019 So I was happy to know that I can take time off work and focus on my school because I know I have that backup money.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also used some of the money to help buy supplies for class.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou think you\u2019re going to be able to use it on yourself, but you use it always for school. I thought, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m going to buy myself something nice!\u2019 No,\u201d she laughed. \u201cIt really helped me get my books. Our pants and our shoes are done in like three months because we walk so much, and our knives are very expensive, so I used a lot of that money for that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Tavarez graduates in May, she hopes to help her mother grow her business, Rossy\u2019s Cafe, in the Texas Panhandle city of Hereford.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy mom owns a little business already, and I think I want to expand it,\u201d Tavarez said. \u201cThat\u2019s why I came here, to get more of the information on how to actually manage it. I just wanted to take over a little bit because it is stressful owning your own business, very stressful. So I want to co-work with her, and hopefully we can do way more.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tavarez said the cafe shows potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a kind of diner place, very chill and relaxed, but there can be way more added to it,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s just hard when you\u2019re trying to pay for what you already have and expand. So hopefully after this I can help Mom make it bigger.
