{"id":2504,"date":"2018-02-05T15:28:02","date_gmt":"2018-02-05T15:28:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=2504"},"modified":"2018-02-05T15:28:02","modified_gmt":"2018-02-05T15:28:02","slug":"a-recipe-for-success-tstc-culinary-arts-hosts-fourth-annual-food-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=2504","title":{"rendered":"A Recipe for Success: TSTC Culinary Arts Hosts Fourth Annual Food Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(HARLINGEN) &#8211; Culinary Arts student Jonathon Perez has been busy in the kitchen preparing his recipes and menu for the Fourth Annual Texas State Technical College Food Festival on Thursday, February 8.<\/p>\n<p>Perez and his peers from Culinary\u2019s International Cuisine class will host the annual event that represents 10 countries, creating at least 30 different dishes from across the globe. They are expected to serve close to 200 people.<\/p>\n<p>The Tennessee native, who is currently in his last semester in the program, has been assigned Russian food and will create four different dishes for the festival. He said this has been something he has been looking forward to for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m pumped and ready for the experience,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is the first time I will do something like this on such a large scale. It\u2019s going to be a lot of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Culinary Arts Lead Instructor Emma Creps said the goal of the food festival is to expose students to what they should expect when they graduate from the program.<a href=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/TSTC-Culinary-Arts-Food-Festival.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2505 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/TSTC-Culinary-Arts-Food-Festival-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"TSTC Culinary Arts Food Festival\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/TSTC-Culinary-Arts-Food-Festival-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/TSTC-Culinary-Arts-Food-Festival-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/TSTC-Culinary-Arts-Food-Festival-1024x731.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/TSTC-Culinary-Arts-Food-Festival-624x446.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe food festival helps our students build confidence as a leader, work on their communication skills and practice for the future,\u201d said Creps. \u201cWhether they\u2019re going to work for a restaurant, open a business or work in the catering industry, the skills they learn are needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Creps added that her first-year students studying food preparation also have the chance to participate in the fun and help prepare dishes alongside students in their last semester.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of learning and training goes on between the first and last semester, and it\u2019s important to get the first-year students involved so they know what to expect and can be better prepared,\u201d said Creps.<\/p>\n<p>The food festival also includes some competition between the students, one of whom gets to take home the People\u2019s Choice Award medal.<\/p>\n<p>As for Perez, who took third place in last year\u2019s Iron Chef competition, he said he has a few surprises up his sleeve and looks forward to working with his first-year partner in making their table and food the most enjoyed and delicious for the win.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to win so badly,\u201d said Perez. \u201cThere are some people that doubt me, and I want to prove that I can do this. No matter what, though, overall it\u2019s going to be a great learning experience and I can\u2019t wait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The food festival is open to TSTC and the surrounding communities. Admission is $10 and includes tasting and one People\u2019s Choice Award ticket, which counts as one vote for a favorite table and a chance to win door prizes, which are baked and prepared by TSTC\u2019s baking class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe encourage everyone to come out and support our students, who are striving to be professional, successful chefs,\u201d said Creps. \u201cCome and enjoy food from across the world and have fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the TSTC Food Festival, call 956-364-4754.
