{"id":2636,"date":"2018-03-12T08:00:11","date_gmt":"2018-03-12T08:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=2636"},"modified":"2018-03-08T22:52:37","modified_gmt":"2018-03-08T22:52:37","slug":"tstc-interview-practicum-sees-growth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=2636","title":{"rendered":"TSTC Interview Practicum Sees Growth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(HARLINGEN) &#8211; For the first time in nearly a decade, Texas State Technical College\u2019s Interview Practicum saw its highest number of participants and had to be extended to three days.<\/p>\n<p>The Interview Practicum is hosted every Fall, Spring and Summer Semesters by TSTC\u2019s Industry Relations and Talent Management Office and usually lasts two days.<\/p>\n<p>At least 260 soon-to-be TSTC graduates from 17 programs attended this year\u2019s event that consisted of mock job interviews, resum\u00e8 building and interview skills workshops.<a href=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/TSTC-InterviewPracticum-2018.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2637 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/TSTC-InterviewPracticum-2018-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"TSTC Interview Practicum\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/TSTC-InterviewPracticum-2018-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/TSTC-InterviewPracticum-2018-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/TSTC-InterviewPracticum-2018-1024x731.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/TSTC-InterviewPracticum-2018-624x446.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Each student participated in three rounds of interviews, each 30 minutes long, and is provided constructive feedback on how to improve his\/her resumes and interview skills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe growth the program has seen is exciting,\u201d said TSTC Industry Relations and Talent Management Director Viviana Espinosa. \u201cThis is the highest number of students we\u2019ve ever had participate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Espinosa added that she is happy to see an increased amount of faculty gaining awareness of the interview practicum and are taking advantage of it for their students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe host these events for our students with the goal of helping them gain the confidence they need for a successful job interview,\u201d said Espinosa. \u201cFor some this is their first interview ever and it\u2019s important they practice talking about their skills and themselves. This is the hardest thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>TSTC Wind Energy Technology student Wade Reynolds said he loves that TSTC holds events like this for its students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s thoughtful, useful and great all around,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m leaving today\u2019s event more confident and prepared for the future. This was my first interview so now I know what to expect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 21-year-old will be earning his associate degree next month and said he has already begun looking into jobs so the critiques he received were invaluable.<\/p>\n<p>Viviana Aguiniga, TSTC Dental Hygiene student, will also be graduating in April and said the practicum was a great learning experience for her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was so nervous coming in,\u201d she said. \u201cBut now I\u2019m leaving with great feedback, advice and more confidence. There\u2019s no doubt that I\u2019m prepared for what\u2019s to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added that the interview process is no longer unknown territory for her and she is grateful to TSTC for providing this opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>As the number of students who participate in the interview practicum grows, so does the number of volunteers who help coach these students.<\/p>\n<p>More than 120 coaches made up of industry partners and community business leaders conducted 750 interviews during the length of the event, many of which go on to hire TSTC graduates.<\/p>\n<p>Some coaches are seasoned and some are brand new and excited to join TSTC in this effort.<\/p>\n<p>This was the first time Fastenal General Manager Gilbert Garcia. \u00a0Participated as a coach Fastenal also hires TSTC students for positions at their locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley and Kingsville.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me helping students succeed is a team effort and I\u2019m looking forward to being a part of this process,\u201d said Garcia. \u201cTSTC has helped us a lot by sending us great graduates who are eager to learn and have a great work ethic.
