{"id":2665,"date":"2018-03-19T08:00:32","date_gmt":"2018-03-19T08:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=2665"},"modified":"2018-03-15T18:55:36","modified_gmt":"2018-03-15T18:55:36","slug":"tstc-biomed-student-finds-opportunity-in-booming-medical-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=2665","title":{"rendered":"TSTC Biomed student finds opportunity in booming medical industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(HARLINGEN) &#8211; Richard Ruiz, a Biomedical Equipment Technology student at Texas State Technical College is expected to graduate next month with his associate degree, but already finds himself working in the field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt all happened so quickly,\u201d he said. \u201cI was only looking for an internship, but ended up with so much more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The La Feria native is completing his internship work and has a permanent position at XOtech, LLC, a Service Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business federal contracting company in Utah that focuses on providing services to the Department of Defense.<\/p>\n<p>The 28-year-old is contracted by the Medical Equipment Concentration Site 88<sup>th<\/sup> area as a Biomedical Electronic Technician 1 overseeing the maintenance and repair of medical equipment in the healthcare setting.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2667 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/TSTCRichardRuiz-Biomed-72dpi-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"Richard Ruiz - TSTC Biomedical student\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/TSTCRichardRuiz-Biomed-72dpi-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/TSTCRichardRuiz-Biomed-72dpi.jpg 504w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so blessed to have been given this opportunity,\u201d said Ruiz. \u201cThis is a huge stepping stone for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prior to pursuing a career path in Biomedical Equipment Technology, Ruiz enrolled at TSTC as a Dental Hygiene student, but realized it was not the path he wanted to follow.<\/p>\n<p>So, he applied to TSTC\u2019s Vocational Nursing program and unfortunately did not get accepted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always loved the medical field and anatomy and physiology, but I was lost,\u201d he said. \u201cI had no idea what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz ended up taking a summer semester off to work and earn money, and then stayed out longer than expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI lost momentum and enjoyed the money I was making, but when my fianc\u00e9 and I learned we were expecting a baby everything shifted,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The jobs he was working at places such as Peter Piper Pizza, Dollar General and in the oil field suddenly were not enough for Ruiz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI needed to do more for my family and I knew I could only do that with an education. And that\u2019s when I found TSTC\u2019s biomed program. I immediately fell in love,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He credits God and all of the instructors in the Biomedical Equipment Technology program for his success and doubled income.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2666 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/TSTCRichardRuiz-Biomed-2-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"Richard Ruiz - TSTC Biomedical student\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/TSTCRichardRuiz-Biomed-2-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/TSTCRichardRuiz-Biomed-2-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/TSTCRichardRuiz-Biomed-2-1024x731.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/TSTCRichardRuiz-Biomed-2-624x446.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t be where I am today without God, TSTC and the training I have received,\u201d he said. \u201cEverything got me ready for something amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ray Longoria, TSTC Biomedical Equipment Technology instructor, said he was not surprised when he learned about Ruiz\u2019s placement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard is an excellent student always demonstrating great initiative, leadership and teamwork,\u201d said Longoria. \u201cHe has a bright future and I see him becoming a lead technician and even opening his own business one day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Longoria said when students like Ruiz move on, which they rightfully should, it\u2019s a bittersweet moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRuiz did so much for us.
