{"id":2852,"date":"2018-04-30T13:29:49","date_gmt":"2018-04-30T13:29:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=2852"},"modified":"2018-04-30T13:29:49","modified_gmt":"2018-04-30T13:29:49","slug":"tstc-grad-secures-job-before-graduating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=2852","title":{"rendered":"TSTC grad secures job before graduating"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(FORT BEND) &#8211; Texas State Technical College Cyber Security Technology student Esteban Martinez from the Fort Bend County campus has waited a long time for graduation day, and tonight, he receives his associate degree with a job offer in hand.<\/p>\n<p>The Needville native will join more than 30 of his peers at TSTC\u2019s Commencement ceremonies being held at the Rosenberg Civic Center and will become a member of an alumni network more than 100,000 strong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m excited to be graduating. I don\u2019t have to worry about studying and tests anymore, said Martinez while laughing. \u201cIn all seriousness though I feel so happy and fulfilled now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 32-year-old began his college journey at the University of Texas-Pan American in the Rio Grande Valley, now known as the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. He was a pre-med student, but as Martinez puts it, life happened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI met my wife there,\u201d he reminisces. \u201cWe got married, had a baby and moved to the Houston area to move closer to her family. So I dropped out.\u201d<a href=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/TSTC-CyberGrad-EstebanMtz.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2853 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/TSTC-CyberGrad-EstebanMtz-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Cyber Security Technology student Esteban Martinez\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/TSTC-CyberGrad-EstebanMtz-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/TSTC-CyberGrad-EstebanMtz-768x1075.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/TSTC-CyberGrad-EstebanMtz-731x1024.jpg 731w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/TSTC-CyberGrad-EstebanMtz-624x874.jpg 624w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/TSTC-CyberGrad-EstebanMtz.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With a passion for the medical field and computers, Martinez tried for months to find an information technology job in a hospital, but every position required a college education and degree.<\/p>\n<p>After seeing a few TSTC advertisements about the campus\u2019 new Cyber Security Technology program, he said he knew what he had to do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was my chance to get the education I needed to get ahead and the career I wanted,\u201d said Martinez.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout his two years as a full-time student at TSTC, he also worked full-time as a cook at a local restaurant and built and repaired computers as a side job.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been a huge challenge and sacrifice. There have been so many hours spent away from my wife and children,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I did what I had to do as a husband, father and provider.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sacrifice and the work paid off for Martinez. He is now a field service technician with Puffer-Sweiven in Stafford, a leading provider of automation valves, measurement and process control solutions in Southeastern Texas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like I can actually enjoy commencement now because I don\u2019t have to worry about job hunting,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s such a load off to know I\u2019m set with a secure job and excellent pay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martinez credits his success and preparedness for the \u201creal-world\u201d to his instructors, their experience, the hands-on training and the additional certifications he received in various software.<\/p>\n<p>He also said he could not have done it without the financial aid and Texas Success Scholarship he received from the college, which minimized financial stress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got training and certifications that I couldn\u2019t have found anywhere else,\u201d he said. \u201cEverything we did in class prepared us to be critical thinkers and self-starters. We (students) definitely leave this program more marketable and competitive out in the field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His wife and children will be sitting in the audience as Martinez walks in to \u201cPomp and Circumstance\u201d and walks across the stage in his cap and gown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope this sets an example for my sons, that if you want something, hard work and believing in yourself will help you accomplish your goals,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>TSTC\u2019s commencement ceremony will be held at the Rosenberg Civic Center tonight at 6 p.m. with TSTC Regent Pat McDonald and President of Si Environmental Jeff Haley, who also serves as Treasure for the Fort Bend Economic Development Council Executive Committee, addressing the graduates and their families as this year\u2019s commencement speaker.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(FORT BEND) &#8211; Texas State Technical College Cyber Security Technology student Esteban Martinez from the Fort Bend County campus has waited a long time for graduation day, and tonight, he receives his associate degree with a job offer in hand.
