{"id":2891,"date":"2018-05-07T13:56:14","date_gmt":"2018-05-07T13:56:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=2891"},"modified":"2018-05-07T13:56:14","modified_gmt":"2018-05-07T13:56:14","slug":"tstc-teex-partnership-bring-low-cost-training-to-rgv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=2891","title":{"rendered":"TSTC, TEEX partnership bring low-cost training to RGV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(HARLINGEN) &#8211; Epitacio Ramirez, lead mechanic at the Brownsville Public Utilities Board, and a few members of his team had the opportunity to train at the Texas A&amp;M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) Mobil Pump and Motor Maintenance trailer parked at Texas State Technical College for a week-long Infrastructure and Safety Summit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been in the field for 33 years and I still find trainings like this one invaluable,\u201d said Ramirez. \u201cThings are always changing so there\u2019s always something new to learn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The summit organized by the Infrastructure Training and Safety Institute, a division of TEEX, the second largest Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training center in the nation and one of only 27 centers across the United States, partnered with TSTC\u2019s Workforce Training and Continuing Education department for the second consecutive year to offer low-cost training for employers. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/TSTC_TEEX-Summit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2892 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/TSTC_TEEX-Summit-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"TSTC, TEEX Summit \" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/TSTC_TEEX-Summit-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/TSTC_TEEX-Summit-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/TSTC_TEEX-Summit-1024x731.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/TSTC_TEEX-Summit-624x446.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>More than 400 people from municipalities and construction companies from Hidalgo, Cameron and Willacy counties took advantage of the low-cost summit and the 21 different trainings offered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re able to offer these trainings at low-cost to no-cost thanks to general revenue funds from the state of Texas,\u201d said Donna Zatopek, senior administration coordinator for TEEX. \u201cOur job is to bring low-cost training to areas that otherwise may not have access to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Ramirez and his team, the Pump and Motor Maintenance course that usually costs $325 was offered for $75 at the summit.<\/p>\n<p>Others, such as the Disaster Preparedness for Hospitals and Healthcare Organizations within the Community Infrastructure, are offered at no cost.<\/p>\n<p>Also, OSHA safety trainings that generally range from $395 to $900 were offered at a discounted \u00a0$65 to $105 at the summit.<\/p>\n<p>Myra Deleon, TSTC continuing education coordinator said the partnership between TEEX and TSTC has helped bring training opportunities to a centralized area of the Rio Grande Valley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis partnership has really allowed our local entities to take advantage of low-cost training right in their backyard,\u201d said Deleon. \u201cAnd not only is this a great opportunity for employers, but it\u2019s also a great way to showcase TSTC and our programs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Deleon also added that many TSTC instructors complete their required trainings by earning certifications and co-teaching during the summit.<\/p>\n<p>In the two years of this partnership, TSTC and TEEX have been able to serve close to 1,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>Infrastructure Training and Safety Institute Division Director Ron Peddy, said that the impact their trainings have made in the region is thanks to the partnership with TSTC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe impact we have made is phenomenal and we couldn\u2019t have done it without TSTC,\u201d said Peddy. \u201cOur goal is to reach as many people as we can because these trainings can save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peddy added, \u201cSafety is our number one priority and our mission is to make a difference through training and build, improve and make communities safer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>TEEX is an internationally recognized leader in the delivery of emergency response, homeland security and workforce training, exercises, technical assistance, and economic development.
