{"id":307,"date":"2016-03-04T03:40:31","date_gmt":"2016-03-04T03:40:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=307"},"modified":"2016-03-07T21:23:28","modified_gmt":"2016-03-07T21:23:28","slug":"tstc-student-enjoying-the-creative-side-of-welding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=307","title":{"rendered":"TSTC Student Enjoying the Creative Side of Welding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(HUTTO) \u2013 James Floyd gained not only law enforcement experience while serving as a military policeman in the U.S. Air Force, but also developed a solid work ethic and leadership skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI learned to see the big picture and can organize the plan to achieve the goal,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Floyd, 30, of Round Rock is scheduled to graduate in May with an associate degree in Welding Technology from Texas State Technical College at the East Williamson County Higher Education Center in Hutto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Floyd observed his father take apart, put together and fix equipment of all kinds while he was growing up. From these experiences, Floyd developed an interest in welding and since attending TSTC he has grown to appreciate its science and artistry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you understand the science, you can control the outcome of what you are welding,\u201d shared Floyd.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He enjoyed learning about tungsten inert gas welding which he called a \u201cclean\u201d welding method with no excess fumes. Floyd likes controlling the heat and travel speed of the cutting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Floyd\u2019s parents were an influence in his choice to attend TSTC. Once he began researching the college and hearing about it from others, he admired the Welding Technology program\u2019s reputation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keith Wojcik, a Welding Technology program instructor, said Floyd challenges him in a positive way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI find him very driven,\u201d said Wojcik. \u201cBeing at the head of the class is not good enough. He\u2019s attentive and asks intelligent questions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After graduation, Floyd wants to pursue an airframe and powerplant certification and work in the aerospace welding industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The College Preview at TSTC will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, April 14.
