{"id":3075,"date":"2018-06-16T09:00:41","date_gmt":"2018-06-16T09:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=3075"},"modified":"2018-06-15T20:29:03","modified_gmt":"2018-06-15T20:29:03","slug":"tstcs-newest-campus-sends-first-skillsusa-competitor-to-nationals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=3075","title":{"rendered":"TSTC\u2019s newest campus sends first SkillsUSA competitor to nationals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(FORT BEND) &#8211; Texas State Technical College Diesel Equipment Technology student Troy Ketchum will be graduating in the coming months, but not before travelling to Louisville, Kentucky as the first student from TSTC in Fort Bend County to compete at the 54<sup>th<\/sup> annual SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can feel the excitement around campus building up about my travel to the upcoming event,\u201d said the 30-year-old. \u201cI hope I can make everyone proud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the month, the Rosenberg native will compete against thousands of other students from across the United States in hopes of bringing home a gold medal in his category: Job Skills Presentation.<\/p>\n<p>SkillsUSA is a professional organization teaching technical, academic and employability skills that help high school and college students pursue successful careers. Members build these skills through student-led team meetings, hands-on competitions, leadership conferences and other activities.<\/p>\n<p>TSTC in Fort Bend County Provost Randy Wooten said that the entire college benefits from having students like Ketchum compete in these events. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/TSTC-TroyKetchum-SkillsUSA-4x6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3076 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/TSTC-TroyKetchum-SkillsUSA-4x6-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Troy Ketchum\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/TSTC-TroyKetchum-SkillsUSA-4x6-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/TSTC-TroyKetchum-SkillsUSA-4x6-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/TSTC-TroyKetchum-SkillsUSA-4x6-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/TSTC-TroyKetchum-SkillsUSA-4x6-624x936.jpg 624w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/TSTC-TroyKetchum-SkillsUSA-4x6.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe student body knows that they are being represented at these events and they are big supporters of Troy,\u201d said Wooten. \u201cAll of us here are thrilled by having our first competitor at the SkillsUSA national level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wooten also said that he has been involved in Ketchum\u2019s dry-run presentations and practices since before the state competition and he knew immediately that he would be hard to beat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s obvious that Troy has what it takes to win. He\u2019s a strong contender,\u201d said Wooten. \u201cAnd having our college represented in Kentucky means that even though we\u2019re the newest and one of the smallest right now, we can run with the big dogs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The United States Navy veteran has been preparing his presentation, \u201cThe Importance of Proper Tread Depth and Safety of Truck Tires,\u201d and his delivery non-stop for this competition.<\/p>\n<p>Ketchum has taken two days out of the week since the beginning of the year to present in front of students, faculty and staff at the campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI practice in front of anyone who is willing to listen,\u201d said Ketchum. \u201cAnd I welcome all feedback.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spencer Paige, lead instructor for Diesel Equipment Technology and SkillsUSA advisor, said Ketchum has told him that he even practices while driving, at work and at home in front his brother or a mirror.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has put in so much work and effort into SkillsUSA. We are proud him,\u201d said Paige. \u201cWe are positive that he will do well and represent TSTC positively.<\/p>\n<p>Paige added, \u201cThe fact that this is our campus\u2019 first SkillsUSA chapter and we\u2019re headed to nationals is remarkable and we hope that more students join us next year. This is a great organization that teaches lessons and skills that stay with you forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ketchum, who is also looking forward to graduating in August said that the skills he has learned in class and by competing in SkillsUSA have prepared him for a job in his field and for what he calls a leap from waiting tables full time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs soon as I return from SkillsUSA I\u2019ll start on job applications.
