{"id":3297,"date":"2018-08-13T08:00:43","date_gmt":"2018-08-13T08:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=3297"},"modified":"2018-08-10T22:04:49","modified_gmt":"2018-08-10T22:04:49","slug":"tstc-partners-with-utrgv-veterans-upward-bound-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=3297","title":{"rendered":"TSTC partners with UTRGV Veterans Upward Bound program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(HARLINGEN) &#8211; Johnny Rivera, a Computer Networking and Security Technology student at Texas State Technical College and U.S. Navy veteran, joined the Veterans Upward Bound program in Spring 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Veterans Upward Bound is an organization aiding veterans in Cameron County and providing a way to level the playing field between those continuously pursuing education and veterans that serve and then return to school.<\/p>\n<p>The program hosted by the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley at TSTC\u2019s Veterans Center also provides one-on-one tutoring services, equipment such as calculators and laptops, financial aid assistance and preparatory TSI tests.<\/p>\n<p>Rivera described the program and his time at the Veterans Center as pleasant and accessible with many resources to meet his day-to-day tasks.<a href=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/TSTC-Veterans-Upward-Bound.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3298 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/TSTC-Veterans-Upward-Bound-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"Veterans Upward Bound \" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/TSTC-Veterans-Upward-Bound-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/TSTC-Veterans-Upward-Bound-768x460.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/TSTC-Veterans-Upward-Bound-1024x614.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/TSTC-Veterans-Upward-Bound-624x374.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have thought of everything you could possibly need. It\u2019s all under one roof,\u201d he said. \u201cI recommend the program to any veteran seeking to make the most out of their education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rivera, who plans to graduate Summer 2020 with an associate degree, said the program has helped him tremendously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere at TSTC I\u2019m receiving the building blocks to transfer to a four-year university for a bachelor\u2019s degree in business administration,\u201d said Rivera. \u201cAnd it\u2019s the VB program that has helped me. It\u2019s so beneficial having someone guide me through the process of re-entering college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jose Villegas, TSTC Veterans Center program officer, said when UTRGV reached out to TSTC to establish a partnership with Veterans Upward Bound, they knew they had to accept.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were excited to see how it could benefit not only our students here at TSTC, but other veterans in our area,\u201d said Villegas. \u201cNot only does the program serve TSTC students, but also veterans throughout Cameron County.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Villegas said the program is able to become more accessible now that it is at TSTC and grow in the number of veterans served \u00a0in Cameron County.<\/p>\n<p>Lizette McNaine, a Veterans Upward Bound program representative, said she sees the partnership with TSTC and the program expanding in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are aiming to increase our scope to reach more veterans,\u201d said McNaine. \u201cWe are unbiased and work with veterans no matter their college or university degree of interest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Veterans Upward Bound program grant began in 1999 and was recently approved for another five years.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about the services offered at the TSTC Veterans Center, call 956-364-4386.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(HARLINGEN) &#8211; Johnny Rivera, a Computer Networking and Security Technology student at Texas State Technical College and U.S. Navy veteran, joined the Veterans Upward Bound program in Spring 2018.
