{"id":3509,"date":"2018-10-22T20:02:43","date_gmt":"2018-10-22T20:02:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=3509"},"modified":"2018-10-22T20:02:43","modified_gmt":"2018-10-22T20:02:43","slug":"tstc-had-the-right-mix-for-success-for-chemical-technology-student","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=3509","title":{"rendered":"TSTC had the right mix for success for Chemical Technology student"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(HARLINGEN) &#8211; Uriah Guerrero played with chemistry sets instead of toy cars and watched science channels instead of cartoons and now he is living his dream at Texas State Technical College as a Chemical Technology student.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTSTC is helping me reach my goals,\u201d Guerrero said. \u201cAnd this is only the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Harlingen native first arrived at TSTC as a biology dual enrollment student when he was a senior at Harlingen South High School.<\/p>\n<p>So, naturally, when he graduated he continued pursuing biology at TSTC for an associate degree, but as he learned more about TSTC he discovered Chemical Technology and immediately knew that\u2019s where he needed to be.<a href=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TSTC-ChemTech-UriahGuerrero-72dpi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3510 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TSTC-ChemTech-UriahGuerrero-72dpi-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"Uriah Guerrero \" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TSTC-ChemTech-UriahGuerrero-72dpi-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TSTC-ChemTech-UriahGuerrero-72dpi.jpg 504w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI needed to make this switch. This program is laying the foundation for everything I want to be when I grow up,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Guerrero hopes to one day be Dr. Guerrero and work as a biochemist researching medicines and their interactions on the human body and diseases.<\/p>\n<p>The 22-year-old said he knows he still has many more years of school ahead so in the meantime he plans to use his associate degree he\u2019ll be earning in Spring 2019 to work as a chemist creating polymers, or plastics.<\/p>\n<p>Already as a student, Guerrero is already learning how to make plastics and resin and learning skills in instrumental analysis, organic chemistry and chemical calculations, all in TSTC labs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learn by doing and besides being close to home, I chose TSTC for its hands-on training,\u201d said Guerrero. \u201cI\u2019m actually gaining experience and this in the long run will be better for my future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Guerrero\u2019s Chemical Technology Instructor John Hamilton said it is Guerrero\u2019s interest in chemistry and his willingness to learn that\u2019ll help him succeed in the field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUriah is a very hard working student,\u201d said Hamilton. \u201cHe is able to overcome challenges in the classroom and the laboratory.
