{"id":3591,"date":"2018-11-12T16:35:06","date_gmt":"2018-11-12T16:35:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=3591"},"modified":"2019-05-01T06:42:34","modified_gmt":"2019-05-01T12:42:34","slug":"tstc-student-takes-degree-overseas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=3591","title":{"rendered":"TSTC Student Takes Degree Overseas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(SWEETWATER) &#8212; Living in a foreign country is a dream to most, but getting paid to live in a foreign country is the way Texas State Technical College student Kaitlin Sullivan is realizing that dream.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sullivan is expected to graduate this fall from TSTC in Sweetwater with an associate degree in Wind Energy Technology and has already accepted a job with Koenig &amp; Bauer, the oldest functioning printing press manufacturer in the world. She will complete her apprenticeship in Germany for two six-month terms, then train with a technician in Dallas for three months until being upgraded to a technician job herself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is an amazing opportunity,\u201d Sullivan said. \u201cI am so excited to travel and learn more about the culture and lifestyle in Germany, all while doing something I\u2019m genuinely interested in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although this is not the path Sullivan ever expected to be on, she is not looking back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI did the traditional four-year college, how \u2018society\u2019 expects you to, and I couldn&#8217;t find a job I liked,\u201d Sullivan said. \u201cSo after a year of job searching, I decided I needed something different and came to TSTC.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sullivan completed her bachelor&#8217;s degree at Tarleton State University, but after having trouble finding a job she was interested in, she took some inspiration from her hometown and made a change. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m from Dumas in North Texas, where there are tons of wind turbines,\u201d Sullivan said. \u201cThey\u2019re fascinating to me. So I did some research, and TSTC popped up with the right program.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon arriving at TSTC, Sullivan immediately impressed her instructors with her drive and dedication to education. Wind Energy Technology instructor Billie Jones taught Sullivan in at least one class each semester and recognized her ambition. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is nothing Kaitlin can\u2019t do once she dedicates her mind to it,\u201d Jones said. \u201cOne of the first things she said to me was that she was in competition with everyone else, just that no one knew it yet. I believe it was that mentality and her willingness to learn that got her where she is today.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the job Sullivan accepted is not in her degree field, it is associated with the sister program, Electromechanical Technology. Since there was only a five-course difference between it and Wind Energy Technology, Electromechanical Technology instructor Ron Rendon agreed to meet with Sullivan and help her cross-train.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cKaitlin is a great leader and very willing to learn. She doesn\u2019t like not knowing,\u201d Rendon said. \u201cShe will be a huge asset wherever she works, and I think she\u2019ll do amazing things.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For anyone hesitant to take the alternative route from a four-year degree, Sullivan says don\u2019t be afraid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople told me I shouldn\u2019t or couldn\u2019t do it,\u201d Sullivan said. \u201cAnd I\u2019m glad I didn&#8217;t listen because I got this job offer two semesters before graduation.
