{"id":3660,"date":"2018-12-10T08:00:54","date_gmt":"2018-12-10T08:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=3660"},"modified":"2018-12-07T16:20:21","modified_gmt":"2018-12-07T16:20:21","slug":"tstc-hosts-an-out-of-this-world-experience-for-the-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=3660","title":{"rendered":"TSTC hosts an out-of-this-world experience for the community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(HARLINGEN) &#8211; Katlyn Nuncio mixed baking soda, salt and water to watch her rocket launch during \u201cJourney to Mars,\u201d a first-of-its-kind event hosted by the Texas State Technical College Challenger Learning Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was so cool watching how the mixture reacted and how high my rocket went,\u201d said the 9-year-old fourth grader from Ed Downs Elementary School in San Benito. \u201cThe event was great. I love science and I hope to become an engineer when I grow up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The half-day event, which was free and open to the public, was attended by more than 200 people.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3661 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/TSTC-JourneyToMars-1-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"TSTC Journey to Mars\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/TSTC-JourneyToMars-1-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/TSTC-JourneyToMars-1-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/TSTC-JourneyToMars-1-1024x731.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/TSTC-JourneyToMars-1-624x446.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was organized in partnership with NASA to celebrate the center\u2019s 5<sup>th<\/sup> and NASA\u2019s 6<sup>th<\/sup> anniversaries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re are so excited with the response we received from the school districts and community,\u201d said Yvette Mendoza, TSTC College Readiness coordinator. \u201cThe number of families who attended this event surpassed all of our expectations. This event was a definite success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event included hands-on activities for all ages from space crafting and gravity affects to Mars rover building and Mars habitat creating.<\/p>\n<p>Every booth was divided into phases, and resembled a space mission set up. Planetarium shows were also available throughout the morning.<\/p>\n<p>For 11-year-old Aiden Barrera from San Benito, \u201cJourney to Mars\u201d was a great way to celebrate his birthday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m into science and engineering, but my favorite subject is math so this event was so much fun for me,\u201d said Barrera. \u201cIt was a great way to spend my birthday weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fifth grader said he had the most fun creating a home for a Mars extraterrestrial creature using paper plates, paper cups, paint and glue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/TSTC-JourneyToMars-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3662 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/TSTC-JourneyToMars-2-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"TSTC Journey to Mars\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/TSTC-JourneyToMars-2-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/TSTC-JourneyToMars-2-768x1075.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/TSTC-JourneyToMars-2-731x1024.jpg 731w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/TSTC-JourneyToMars-2-624x874.jpg 624w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/TSTC-JourneyToMars-2.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/a>\u201cThis was truly a team effort.
