{"id":3711,"date":"2018-12-24T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-12-24T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=3711"},"modified":"2018-12-19T17:14:58","modified_gmt":"2018-12-19T17:14:58","slug":"world-of-nursing-welcomes-tstc-graduates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=3711","title":{"rendered":"World of nursing welcomes TSTC graduates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(HARLINGEN) &#8211; After four semesters of blood, sweat, tears and sacrifice, Texas State Technical College Vocational Nursing students celebrated the completion of their program with a pinning ceremony held Saturday, Dec. 8.<\/p>\n<p>All thirteen nursing students earned certificates in Vocational Nursing during TSTC\u2019s commencement ceremony at the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium on Dec. 14.<\/p>\n<p>The pinning ceremony was described by TSTC Vocational Nursing program director Heather Sauceda as the rite of passage into the nursing profession.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3712 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/TSTC-VN-Pinning-1-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"TSTC Vocational Nursing Pinning Ceremony\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/TSTC-VN-Pinning-1-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/TSTC-VN-Pinning-1-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/TSTC-VN-Pinning-1-1024x731.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/TSTC-VN-Pinning-1-624x446.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so proud of each and every one of my students,\u201d Sauceda said tearfully. \u201cThey have worked so hard and put in countless hours to achieve everything they have. And they deserve to be celebrated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pinning ceremony stems from a tradition that dates back to the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, when Florence Nightingale, a trailblazing figure in the nursing profession and the founder of modern-day nursing, trained nurses to care for wounded soldiers.<\/p>\n<p>The Dec. 8 ceremony included a capping ceremony, presentation of pins, candle-lighting ceremony that signified the light of knowledge, reciting of the Nightingale Pledge, and blessing of hands and benediction led by Pastor Danny Anderson of the Bridge-Rio Hondo Baptist Church.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese graduates are confident, passionate, and I know they will be the best nurses they can be,\u201d said Sauceda. \u201cToday marks the beginning for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/TSTC-VN-Pinning-2-72dpi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3713 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/TSTC-VN-Pinning-2-72dpi-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"TSTC Vocational Nursing Pinning Ceremony\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/TSTC-VN-Pinning-2-72dpi-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/TSTC-VN-Pinning-2-72dpi.jpg 504w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The program\u2019s valedictorian, Ivette Cruz, and salutatorian, Julie Villarreal, were also honored at the ceremony for their academic achievements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never imagined I would be valedictorian,\u201d said Cruz. \u201cIn fact, in the beginning I felt like quitting. I didn\u2019t start strong and failed some exams, but here we are. \u00a0I\u2019ve come a long way, and I have my entire family to thank for this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is God\u2019s purpose for us, and today we\u2019re fulfilling his purpose,\u201d said Villarreal through tears of joy. \u201cBut our success doesn\u2019t only belong to us, it also belongs to everyone who has supported us and guided us along the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Villarreal also left her fellow graduates with some words of wisdom: \u201cNever doubt your ability to make a difference in someone\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony also included addresses from TSTC Provost Cledia Hernandez, Associate Provost Jean Lashbrook, and guest speaker and Director of Nursing Operations at South Texas Rehabilitation Hospital Gabriela Garza.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are now part of someone\u2019s life journey and walking alongside people during their greatest time of need,\u201d said Garza. \u201cThe key to being a great nurse is knowing yourself.
