{"id":591,"date":"2016-07-22T16:20:05","date_gmt":"2016-07-22T16:20:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=591"},"modified":"2016-07-22T21:18:53","modified_gmt":"2016-07-22T21:18:53","slug":"tstc-student-eager-to-begin-office-career","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=591","title":{"rendered":"TSTC Student Eager To Begin Office Career"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(MARSHALL) \u2013 Trayci Fields\u2019 life changed at 18 when she gave birth to a son.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, she persevered and will soon call herself a college graduate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fields, 25, of Longview, is scheduled to graduate in August with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Professional Office Technology and a Microsoft Office Specialist certification at Texas State Technical College in Marshall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been with Trayci through the tears and the smiles,\u201d said Robert Brown, director of Information Technology Studies at TSTC. \u201cShe\u2019s worked hard to earn her way and we\u2019re very proud of her.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She encountered the typical challenges that young working parents face while balancing child care, employment, studying and classes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was working and had a job and that job kind of took a lot of my time and I was going for an internship as well,\u201d Fields said. \u201cIt did get real hard for me when I was supposed to finish, but I prolonged it because I knew I needed to work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carolyn O\u2019Neill, lead instructor in the Professional Office Technology program at TSTC in Marshall, said she admired Fields\u2019 tenacity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOf all the classes she took, she worked at the Microsoft certification the hardest,\u201d O\u2019Neill said. \u201cI was very proud of her and the fact that she never quit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After graduation, Fields wants to pursue a bachelor\u2019s degree and work in a healthcare setting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI will always have a job somewhere and anywhere there is a hospital and clinic,\u201d Fields said. \u201cIn this technical program, I can work in office settings and it doesn\u2019t have to be in the medical field.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, she hopes she can set a good example for her son, now 6.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe is already noticing,\u201d Fields said about her upcoming graduation. \u201cI just want him to know that after high school you have to keep going while you are young and don\u2019t stop.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fields grew up in Longview and graduated in 2009 from Longview High School, where she played tennis and was in the Science Club.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt age 14, 15, 16 I knew I was going to college somewhere,\u201d she said. \u201cI didn\u2019t think it would be 25 minutes from where I would come from.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She was familiar with TSTC because she once lived in Marshall and had a relative who graduated from the technical college.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey (the faculty) actually helped me so much along the way in the program where sometimes I didn\u2019t know if I was going to pass or not,\u201d Fields said. \u201cThey were always encouraging.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TSTC in Marshall\u2019s Summer Commencement will be at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19 at the Julius S.
