{"id":747,"date":"2016-09-07T19:58:04","date_gmt":"2016-09-07T19:58:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=747"},"modified":"2016-09-13T14:18:37","modified_gmt":"2016-09-13T14:18:37","slug":"tstc-works-with-waco-companies-on-skills-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/?p=747","title":{"rendered":"TSTC Works With Waco Companies on Skills Development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(WACO) \u2013 Texas State Technical College in Waco and the Texas Workforce Commission are partnering to provide workforce development to two local companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jobe\u2019s on Franklin Avenue and Hobbs Bonded Fibers on South Commerce Drive, both in Waco, are utilizing TSTC\u2019s Workforce Training and Continuing Education programs to update workers\u2019 skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI know the quality of education at TSTC,\u201d said Wayne Winekauf, Jobe\u2019s director of plant operations. \u201cI\u2019m very impressed. It\u2019s a gem that is hidden.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jobe\u2019s employees take master rolls of outdoor commercial fabric, such as burlap and sun screen, and cut them to be consumer-ready in various lengths. The company has 30 workers, but increases to 100 employees during their busy period from January to May.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Jobe\u2019s workers recently took part in operation care classes through a state Skills Development Fund grant valued at more than $60,000. Workers learned about troubleshooting, upkeep and quality control on their shrink wrap, winding and other machines. A representative from the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration also visited to talk about workplace and machine safety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTSTC is focused on the manufacturing side,\u201d said Winekauf. \u201cThe safety was key to having someone come in and review the safety recommendations. Someone from the outside is respected more.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several of Jobe\u2019s workers said they benefited from the training.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arturo Vicinais, a night lead operator who runs machines and works on production floor compliance, has been at the company for 10 years. He appreciated the training in the importance of communication, inspection and audit forms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can take more pride in your work and everything will be more organized,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barron Parks, a machine operator, has worked at Jobe\u2019s the last year and a half.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe safety class we had was very much needed,\u201d Parks said. \u201cThere are a lot of dangerous machines here if you don\u2019t know the safety procedures. Everyone should be held more responsible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thirty-eight workers from Hobbs Bonded Fibers began taking Thursday and Friday classes in mid-August lasting for six weeks so they can learn to weld using structured steel.
