So, he said goodbye to his hometown to pursue his passion at Texas State Technical College in Harlingen.<\/p>\n<p>The 18-year-old said that there were many institutions he researched, but only TSTC offered him exactly what he was searching for.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was looking for a school that had Biomedical Equipment Technology as a major and this was one of the only ones in Texas, so I decided to come down here,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s only two hours away, I figured I can manage.\u00a0 I\u2019m excited to be somewhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biomedical Equipment Technology is designed to be 70 percent hands-on and teaches students how to repair medical equipment that is used in hospitals, nursing homes and clinics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a blessing to visit the school,\u201d said his mother, Diana Murphy.\u00a0 \u201cThe tour of his room was awesome.\u00a0 My son is very excited about coming to school here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Watching your child leave the nest can be difficult, but Murphy\u2019s father is happy that his son isn\u2019t too far away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always hard.\u00a0 Matt<a href=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/MatthewMurphy_BioMedStudent.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-759 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/MatthewMurphy_BioMedStudent-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"Matthew Murphy and his parents\" width=\"347\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/MatthewMurphy_BioMedStudent-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/MatthewMurphy_BioMedStudent-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/MatthewMurphy_BioMedStudent-1024x731.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/MatthewMurphy_BioMedStudent-624x446.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 347px) 100vw, 347px\" \/><\/a>hew\u2019s our youngest,\u201d said Larry Murphy.\u00a0 \u201cHim being here isn\u2019t too bad, and we are thankful that it\u2019s close enough for us to be able to come down on a weekend if we want to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biomedical Equipment Technology Interim Program Chair Ray Longoria makes sure that incoming students know that the program is challenging and requires student commitment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis program offers students the opportunity to work in one of the most rewarding fields.\u00a0 They will also get the chance to get hands-on with some of the most sophisticated equipment designed to improve and save lives,\u201d said Longoria.\u00a0 \u201cOne of the most satisfying aspects of this field is when you get to see a patient being worked on with a machine that you helped repair.\u00a0 It\u2019s one of the greatest feelings to see the accomplishment of your skill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>TSTC students learn biomedical equipment maintenance and repair on state of the art medical equipment used in hospitals and clinics.<\/p>\n<p>Biomedical Equipment Technology is taught at the Harlingen, Marshall and Waco campuses.\u00a0 For more information visit http:\/\/www.tstc.edu\/programs\/BiomedicalEquipmentTechnology.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(HARLINGEN) &#8211; For Portland native Matthew Murphy, volunteering at a local hospital this summer helped him discover that the biomedical field was his calling.
