Losing a loved one is an excruciating time for many families, but for Larissa Ramirez, losing her beloved aunt to cancer helped her make the important decision of returning to college.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy aunt was always talking about the value of an education and she was an educator herself, so I know she\u2019d be proud of me for taking this step,\u201d said the 20-year-old San Benito native.\u00a0 \u201cI was really close to her.\u00a0 It\u2019s been a little over a year since she\u2019s been gone, and it\u2019s motivating me to work really hard,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ramirez is no stranger to hard work, she has had to work multiple service industry jobs to support herself.<\/p>\n<p>She previously attended another educational institution and earned a medical assistant certificate, but found herself in t<a href=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Larissa-Ramirez.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-831 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Larissa-Ramirez-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"Larissa Ramirez\" width=\"327\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Larissa-Ramirez-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Larissa-Ramirez-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Larissa-Ramirez-1024x731.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.tstc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Larissa-Ramirez-624x446.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 327px) 100vw, 327px\" \/><\/a>he wrong profession.\u00a0 The decision to start college wasn\u2019t difficult for Ramirez to make, and she looks forward to what being a student will bring for her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve learned to manage my time really well because of my work schedule, and I really think that\u2019s going to help me get through school.\u00a0 Staying up late at night to study will be a piece of cake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She is now pursuing her Academic Core, basics, so she can go on to a 4-year university and pursue a bachelor\u2019s degree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m excited to be back in school, meet new people and branch out.\u00a0 Two of my best friends attended TSTC and they spoke really highly of it.\u00a0 They mentioned that the instructors were very hands-on with their teaching and that\u2019s one of the best ways that I learn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the fact that Ramirez has a great support system between friends and family, she also mentions that she is very comfortable standing on her own two feet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t take anything for granted and I know that success comes from pushing yourself to work hard for what you want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked what she would tell a young adult contemplating whether or not they should go back to college, she calls on the same wisdom that several mentors have told her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was always told to push yourself.\u00a0 Not just from my mom, aunt and family, but also from teachers and coworkers.\u00a0 If you want to make something better for yourself, absolutely go back to college.\u00a0 If I can do it, they can do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For more information on TSTC\u2019s Academic Core, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tstc.edu\">www.tstc.edu<\/a> to learn more.<\/p>\n<p>TSTC\u2019s Academic Core is transferable to any 4-year university in the state of Texas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(HARLINGEN) &#8211;
